Geek lexicography and pronunciation

Catherine Sangster is head of pronunciations for OUP Dictionaries. She is interested in how words from geekdom get moderated, codified, authorized, and find their way into dictionaries. Last year she ran Geek Dictionary Corner for Nine Worlds attendees' submissions of all those words that aren't yet in the dictionary but ought to be. This year she'll be back with an update on those words' progress, and looks forward to a new crop of suggestions.

Before moving into lexicography, Catherine spent nine years in the BBC Pronunciation Unit, and did a doctorate in sociolinguistics. Her research interests include language and gender/sexuality, feminism, accents and dialects, Latin, Germanic languages, and the phonology of conlangs.
