Cosplay Beyond: Hair and Make-Up Effects

Welcome, traveller, to Nine Worlds' Cosplay Beyond! Maybe you've never tried cosplay; maybe you're a veteran; but Cosplay Beyond has something to offer everyone. Nine Worlds is a great opportunity to see and participate in some incredible cosplay: last year alone saw a fantastic array from Dr Horrible to a xenomorph. But it's not just the costumes that sell your character: Cosplay Beyond will teach you some fun and easy tricks on special make-up effects that'll provide that convincing edge and extra polish, and level up your cosplay from great to awesome. We're bringing back last year's phenomenally popular tutorials on stage wounds and grisly make-up effects, as well as joining the ASOIAF track to bring you a masterclass in Game of Thrones hairstyling.

All in Royal B or in Room 32.

Hair

Laugh It Up, Fuzzball: Sci-fi and Fantasy Hair Design Workshop
Royal B, Saturday, 1.30pm

From Legolas, the Timotei Elf, to Leia, Princess of Cinnamon Buns, fantasy and sci-fi media have some of the most creative and extravagant stylings of hair, the perfect way to finish off your cosplay or Halloween ensemble. Cosplay Beyond are excited to bring you a fun tutorial on hair braiding and styling, starting with the basics (beginners and experts alike are very welcome), then showing how these can be used to imitate character styles, including characters from Star Wars, Disney, Lord of the Rings and more.

Braids of Ice and Fire: Game of Thrones Hair Design Workshop
Royal B, Sunday, 1.30pm

New for this year, we're crossing over with the Game of Thrones track to bring you a very special workshop on recreating the hairstyles of Westeros and Essos. We'll start by demonstrating and guiding you through the basics of some key braiding techniques, so even if you've never done a simple plait, you'll be able to pick it up quickly and easily. From there, we'll show you how you can use and combine these methods to imitate styles worn by many beloved (and less beloved) characters. We will do our best to show you as many as possible in the limited time, and aim to include character styles suitable for a variety of lengths, from just above the shoulder down - and, if we have a suitable volunteer, maybe even a beard or two!

Stage Wounds

We're resurrecting last year's phenomenally popular interactive workshops on grisly make-up effects: there'll be four sessions, and we'll learn different skills for each. Children are welcome to those with minimal gore, while the sessions demonstrating more gruesome effects may not be suitable. These are fully interactive workshops, and a whole lot of fun: come on your own or with friends and family. There's also some flexibility, so if there's an effect you're just dying to learn about, feel free to ask us to demonstrate!

Introduction to Ickiness: Basic Wounds Workshop One - Bruises and Superficial Cuts
Room 32, Friday, 11.45am
After a short demo explaining the theory, everyone can have a go, with advice along the way on bringing realism to your work. We'll round off the session with a more advanced effect you might want to bring out for your next Halloween costume, a deep, painful-looking vampire bite.

Age suitability: PG – children are very welcome but be advised this is a wound workshop. There will be (fake) blood.

The Horror! The Horror! Gruesome Injuries Workshop One -
Pustules and Bruises
Room 32, Friday, 5pm
After a short demo explaining the theory, everyone can have a go, with advice along the way on bringing realism to your work. We'll round off the session with a more advanced effect; a bloody eye socket. Can't imagine where that idea came from.
Age suitability: 15 – the effects we're demonstrating in this session may be a little gory for those who are younger or are easily squicked.

Introduction to Ickiness: Basic Wounds Workshop Two - Burns and Bruises
Royal B, Saturday, 11.45am
After a short demo explaining the theory, everyone can have a go, with advice along the way on bringing realism to your work. We'll round off the session with a more advanced effect; this time we're doing an infected knife wound.

Age suitability: PG – children are welcome but be advised this is a wound workshop. There will be (fake) blood.

The Horror! The Horror! Gruesome Injuries Workshop Two - Advanced Bruises and Deep Cuts
Royal B, Sunday, 11.45am
After a short demo explaining the theory, everyone can have a go, with advice along the way on bringing realism to your work. We'll round off our final session with a more advanced effect; using prosthetics to create a slit throat.

Age suitability: 15 – the effects we're demonstrating today may be a little gory for those who are younger or are easily squicked.
