From Back to the Future and Looper to The Time Traveller’s Wife, this talk looks at the problems and opportunities faced when writing time travel. Ignoring any pretence of "realism", we focus on creating internally consistent time travel logic.
We’ll ask what actually happens if you go back in time and kill your grandfather, and how to decide where to start telling your story when the end of the story is what causes the beginning. Meanwhile we’ll be looking at the different “rules” of time travel- from the impossibility of changing history, to divergent timelines, causal loops and magic fading photographs.
